Power girl, the super strong, tough, flying brick of the marvel universe, in 1960 as Marvel's reply to supergirl and wonderwoman. She was strong tough and her comic tanked. Fans just were not willing to warm up to a obvious rip off of super girl even down to the orgin story, but the excutives were determined to shoe horn her in.

Meanwhile Stan Lee was fresh from his massive success with the fantastic four and wanted to create a story about a teenager bitten by a radioactive spider. The Marvel higher ups at the time were convinced that that 'spiderman' was too scary and woulden't sell, they were also convinced that Power girl was a winner. Stan Lee and his Artis Steve Dikto were resentful about the editors decision and tried to fight for their orgininal creative vision.

In the end the editors created a compromise, power girl would be included in the new spiderman series but the two of them would have complete creative control. The result was a writer and artist revolt, Stan Lee put off her apperance until after spider mans orgin was finished, and then firmly deconstructed the entire idea of power girl's orgin.

Alien from a dying world? Well she didn't know english did she? Money? Didn't have that? Powered by the sun? Well that meant she had limited reserves of power right, and losing every one you knew and loved? That had to hurt you, and give you issues. Why was she in spiderman? Peter had out of guilt decided to shelter the alien refugee, naming her Karen Star because he kind of froze when he introduced her to aunt May.

Steve Dikto's revolt was to change her previous outfit, create the now iconic boob window and just kept expanding her chest until the editors told him to stop. The two of them were ready for the new series to tank, and then it didn't. The Spiderman series became on of marvel's cash cows. With the series still running to this day.

But what would have happened if Power girl belonged to DC instead?
