DBWI: Pan-India movement?

We all know about the Indian subcontinent and the complete mess of countries they are there. From Pashtunistan to Nagaland, from Jammu to Dravida Nadu (the largest country in the subcontinent, btw), there is no shortage of countries in the subcontinent.

But what if they had been a Pan-India movement? How would the subcontinent look today?

Hard to imaginate that happening. India just is too diverged and Brits made all possible that such can't ever happen. You would need pre-colonial POD before you can get pan-India. And even then it would collapse quickly. India just not be such region which would last unified very long.

You could have fewer countries in India, but it would require some work.

Maybe half a dozen countries or so? Bengal, some kind of mostly Muslim state around the Indus, Hyderabad, Mysore, Dravida/Deccan, Assam, a united Kashmir, and some type of federal dealie in the mostly Hindu north?

With the British military support to Hyderabad (“Operation Kangjei”) it’s hard to see the Princely State merging to any other nation.

Maybe the Nazim expands his dominion? A POD where he expands his control over, say, all of southern India?

I was reading a book on Indian history and how it mentioned three barristers: Muhammad Jinnah, Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharalal Nehru and how they formed the All India Patriotic League, a Pan India party which never really got anywhere. Maybe you can get the AIPL to become stronger?

Either that or have some pre-modern conqueror unite India. It already happened under Ashoka. Honestly, if it was not for the Tang Dynasty invasion, that empire would still probably kicking today...

It would either be in a state of total dysfunction, crisis, and chaos due to extremely massive disagreements. Indeed, this is what would happen when you put extremely diverse people into one country.
