DBWI: Ogodei dies earlier

What if Ogodei Khan's heart attack after the Battle of Paris had happened earlier. Say, before the Sack of Vienna. How much would it have changed history?

Stronger Austria, certainly. I doubt the HRE would have the impetus to centralise without the Mongol invasions, and I also very much doubt that the Greeks* would have been able to regain dominance over the Haemic peninsula* without the Mongols to destroy every in their way for them.

*As a western European ITTL, I'm assuming I'll be referring to this hypothetical restored Byzantium as "Greece".
*Haemic peninsula is the Byzantine term for the Balkans.

Will it really change that much? I mean, there will be a brief delay when the leaders return to Karakorum to elect the new khan, but is there any reason they wouldn't return to Europe in the spring? They've already seen how vulnerable the European states were. Will the delay give the European kings a chance to prepare for the next round of invasion, maybe?

The Khanates are their own worst nightmare in this regard, the reason his conquests where never followed up on after his death was because of the flaws in the Mongol's inheritance system, their empires where balkanized immediately on the death of the Khan and given to his kids. Youd need to find a way to give him one heir on his death, which is near impossible given how he had nearly a hundred wives.

I don't think anyone can call any portion of a split Mongol Empire balkanized... :p

Other than the Timurid Dyanasty in China name one Mongol state that didnt fall apart quickly after the death of the Khan, the fragments last a long time but once they where broken up they stopped expanding and fell apart quickly. I mean look at the Holy Roman Empire and France, after his death they where pushed out within the decade and never got past Poland again.

With Ogodei dying before the mongol conquest of Europe, I doubt you will see the emergence of the Northern European thasselocracies. The rape of the low countries saw a tremendous wave of refugees heading to Britain and Scandinavia. These immigrants brought with them an immense store of technical knowledge particularly in textiles, shipbuilding, and trade as well as whatever wealth they could load-up into a cog. When the conquests ended, England and Norway were uniquely positioned to take advantage of the trade opportunities presented by Pax Mongolia transforming them to the trading powerhouses of Europe by the 17th century.

This brings up an interesting point: will the English still dominate Occidentalia in this timeline without the Mongol destruction of their rivals in France and the Low Countries? (Assuming, of course, that they don't return to finish what they started...) Perhaps we'd see large-scale Dutch or Flemish colonization of the New World...
