Inspiring speech the President gave--I hadn't realized how bad transportation could get off the rail lines, or how poor those areas were. The idea of being able to travel where I want to go, when I want to go there, rather than operating on the Railroad Trust's schedules all the time, is stirring (though I don't know if it's practical).
But still--the Railroad Trust is a powerful enemy to take on. They've got a lot of money and clout. And a national Transportation Internet (1) system would be very expensive. Does Obama really have the political capital to do this?
(And yes, it's basically a version of the autobahn system. I'll go out on a limb and say that doesn't mean it's a bad idea, just because Hitler thought of it.)
1) OOC: Well, TTL obviously didn't have the "Information Superhighway" metaphor.
