DBWI: Northern Europe went metric?

It's interesting how the metric system didn't get very far, when it looks logical on paper. But the German countries went and redefined their Landmeile to the Imperial mile of 5280 feet (statute mile of 1593) back in the 19th, and the Scandinavian countries went with their own systems that seemed to coalesce then too. Could they have ever gone metric?

I think that it boils down to SI being French in origin and after Napoleon it didn't matter how logical the system was there was no way it was going to be adopted apart from in France. Remember they did the same to the calendar and that didn't even survive Napoleon!
