DBWI: No UK involvement in Vietnam War?

From 1968-1973, the United Kingdom participated in the Vietnam War. However, what if that did not happen?

Keeping the UK out of Vietnam would require preventing Lord Mountbatten's Coup which given that Wilson was a KGB agent seems ASB to me. Maybe have him lose the 1964 election ?

I think we would have lost. They were critical in invading north Vietnam.

We did lose. Invading North Vietnam was the second Gallipoli that cost us countless men, incurring China's wrath, and killed any hope of the public support of the war.

South Vietnam never stood a chance once we and the UK bail.

well, considering that north vietnam bankrupted itself trying to reunite Vietnam, and collapsed in 1982, I consider that a tie at the very least

for how long? have you seen it now? everyone's protesting against communism

Not really. There already started to stop protesting and those are just the hold outs. Vietnam is not a Asian Tiger for no reason. Ans they have reform since the 80s.

Maybe the UK would have been spared the days and horrors of Lord Mountbatten dictatorship and it much more lively and no where near depressed. Also stop the massacre and war crimes carry out in Northen Ireland.

what? avoid Lord Mountbatten? if he didn't start his junta after Vietnam, he would have started at the Malvinas war. or in 1989, when he exploited Chinese unrest to try and nuke it. good thing he was thrown out

What are you talking about? His Junta was started in the 60s,and was kick out of power just after we lost in Vietnam.

OOC: This is the worst example of an DBWI in play. Everyone is contradicting each other with their own AU. I suggest this be closed down and started anew.

Personally I credit the Vietnam experience as the key to Britain remaining a semi-expeditionary power, rather than withdrawing into Europe and having the same military as everyone else. While CVA01 and TSR2 remained firmly cancelled the war reversed the earlier decision to cease carrier aviation so the Eagle was retained until 1984 and the Ark Royal until 1987. The F111K did Stirling work as did the multi-role Lightning, neither of which might have seen the light of day without the commitment to the high intensity war.

While Vietnam itself might be pretty shit it can be argued that the more powerful British expeditionary capabilities lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1987.

The F111K did Stirling work.
Hugh Oswald Short who did not die until 1969 was very proud. The other Short Brothers and Arthur Gouge would have been proud too had they lived long enough.

It's sterling work not Stirling work. However, I once wrote in the minutes of a meeting that one of the estimators said that his job was sole destroying instead of soul destroying. That is it destroyed his shoes instead of making him feel depressed.

Autocorrect on the phone when I was on the train, but you can't argue with the sentiment.

That said, the Short Brothers could well receive a further order for Belfasts to undertake the heavy lift task in Vietnam.
