DBWI: No "Star Trek: The New Frontier" (c.2007-)

OOC: The following thread is based on the idea that the following project had been "greenlit" by CBS-TV:

IC: We are now entering Season 3 of the series, and the adventures of Captain Alexander Chase have been said to have revived the ailing franchise in the aftermath of the Star Trek: Enterprise fiasco. With the new J.J. Abrams movie coming in a few months, how would the franchise have been altered by the absence of Star Trek: The New Frontier? Would the franchise have survived? Would Abrams and Whedon have teamed up for the creation of the film?

If it weren't for the TOS-ish look of the animated series (or rather, this new one since there was one in the 70's), the new film probably would have taken more liberties with the original shows designs in my opinion. Who knows, maybe they would have redone the ship and interiors to some modern day design like an apple store instead of just keeping the original design with slight modifications and more detail. What hell that would have played with the canon.

I think it would have survived though. The fan films can be attributed to doing a lot for Trek, and are prominant even in the real world (New Voyages can actually be credited with inspiring the new film to be TOS), and probably would have been even more prominent without anything official. So, as odd as it sounds, I think they could have kept it afloat. Plus, you have novels and other fan productions which kept Trek alive after TOS was cancelled, and could have done the same without another series.

OOC: This thing could still be green lit, you know?

Hard core Trekkies are still boycotting the show because of the massive deviation from Gene Roddenbury's vision of the future and there is still a belief that the Trek Franchise has been hijacked by disgruntled Babylon 5/Farscape/Andromeda fanboys to pervert the most enduring franchise of them all.

I don't like the cartoon, but I'm really looking forward to the Abrams-Whedon film.

OOC: An Abrams-Whedon Star Trek would be freaking awesome.

Then again, you have to admit that the cartoon has attracted a fan base that is usually apt to ignore such genre offerings. LeVar Burton has certainly made a great casting coup by bringing in actors such as Katherine Heigl, Seth Green, Sarah Silverman, Drew Barrymore, and even Seth McFarlane to do voices for the series. There is even talk about James Spader doing a guest-role in the near future....
