DBWI: No Second Restoration

What if Queen Anne I didn't name her brother, James, as her successor? This would mean that the main line Stuarts aren't restored to the throne of England. I heard that Anne I planned to have her distant cousin, George of Hanover(I think) made her successor. This would be rather hard as I doubt that the English would support a German over a full Englishman(even a Catholic). And one who could nearly speak English!!! Still, let's flip a switch and say the Hanoverians take over. Does this mean the union between England and Scotland stays? Would there still be the English Empire, or the Twenty Years War? What if?

I suspect the Elector could have been bought off by territorial compensations for Hanover; I'm not sure he'd have bothered to press his claim.

You think the Elector would sacrifice his claim to England for some German lands! What territorial compensations anyway!!!! However, Hanover would find itself at war with the French, who support James. Maybe a Stuart version of the Wars of the Roses?!

OOC: OK you do know that this scenario is IMPOSSIBLE, right??? Anne can't name her heir. The succession is decided by Parliament. The only way James could become King is threw a coup right after Anne's death, which I discussed with JedidiahStott here: http://www.gateway.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=266798 or if he converted to Anglicanism fairly early, like 1707 or onwards. There would have to be enough time for Parliament to recognize his rights and that his conversion was genuine, or as genuine as it could be. But this scenario doesn't make sense, and I'm saying this as a Jacobite supporter.

That's why I think he could be bought off; I'm doubt he'd be able to win, so I think he'd take the sure thing. It's not like he had any real attachment to England. I'm sure the French could find something to appease him.

OOC: I assumed the ATL basically was a Jacobite coup, with Anne's "will" as a legitimization of it.
