DBWI: No President J. Edgar Hoover

Gone Fishin'
What if President J. Edgar Hoover had never been born? What would be the state of American politics and crime fighting without his service, both as a bureaucrat and as a leader? Would there be more faith in and respect for the office of the president and the FBI (not to mention the police and government in general)? Where would civil rights be by now? Censorship? Communism, both foreign and domestic?

Undoubtedly America would have been far better off. Hoover was the closest the nation ever came to outright Fascism. A bad President and an even worse human being. I know there are those who wax somewhat nostalgic about him, but they're just as nuts as those in the USSR who to this day wax nostalgic about Stalin. If I sound bitter about him, it's for good reason. My grandfather spent several years in one of his "camps" out West for no reason other than an anonymous allegation of "Un-Americanism" -- that against a man who was for his whole life up to then a staunch Republican. To this day, the May 2 date of Hoover's death is celebrated in my family as a holiday.

President Hoover is one of the most misunderstood men in American history. Despite his negative reputation among fringe liberals, he was certainly one of our greatest presidents ever. He made America a more solid, unified nation. Without him, we may very well have collapsed just like the Soviet Union, a house divided. Our unity is what has made us strong. Without the standard that Hoover set, we'd be just another nation. Instead, we're AMERICA, the freest, richest, and best nation in the world. Anyone who says otherwise deserves to get shot. Twice.

I don't think our nation would've collapsed like the USSR if Hoover hadn't become President. Infact, I think we'd be a lot healthier, since our culture in the 60's would have been actual culture instead of propaganda.

Besides, Hoover's undemocratic presidency led to the dissolution of NATO and the formation of the EDC as a third bloc in the Cold War. I think the Cold War would've ended earlier and more peacefully had NATO stayed together. Maybe we'd have actually have been able to do something when the P.R.C. dissolved.

OOC: Am I the only one who remembers that episode of Red Dwarf where it's revealed that if Kennedy lived, J. Edgar Hoover would've become president after Kennedy was impeached? :p As for my comment about China, J Edgar Hoover never opens up relations with China like Nixon did. This results in the Gang of Four staying in power in China, which leads to the eventual collapse of China in a bloody civil war ala Yugoslavia.
