DBWI: No President Casey

Off topic guys, but i have to ask what was your favorite moment from the 92 election, mines either has to be Bob Caseys awesome DNC speech (even if it did fire the shot which lead to Social Liberals deseriting the party) or Buchanans awesome "George HW BUSH is a phony"speech where he essentially told bush and his crew to go screw themselves?

Huckabee's Presidency being an example of the third party stuff. While he managed to get some much-needed economic reforms through, the GOP and the Reform Party both acted together to block that godawful bill he tried to introduce banning SSM on a federal level - both of the parties acting together were enough to sink it, and once it became clear that they'd cooperate to stop any similar legislation he just ended up dropping it and focusing on economic and military policies for the rest of his Presidency.
TBH Huckabee's administration definitely improved the economy, but the drama surrounding the Huckabee administration was just too much. Dropping VP Bayh in 2012 because he refused to support the SSM bill and replacing him with Rick Perry definitely did him in. The charismatic McCain getting the nomination over former VP Chafee (who had 'roughly the charisma of a ham sandwich') and choosing Reform Party Senator Lieberman as his VP was perhaps the best outcome for the Republicans, and brought the Republican and Reform parties even closer together. It was a sharp and much needed contrast to a ticket of two Southern democrats and party that was out of touch with the American people on social issues. Thank God, they've moderated on their positions recently, it really looks like Kaine's got a chance in 2020.

Well I would not count his nomination as a sure thing just yet, not with Senator Rick Santorum doing a pretty damn good job rallying the forces which nominated Huckabee to his side. Sure Kaine is leading in most polls but if hes not careful he can lose to a base revolt. He also has to deal with Senate Majority Leader Manchin, who would moderate the party but not at risk of handing over the South to the Constuion party on a platter.

OOC: Maybe Bayh should be switched for Dodd as VP? Bayh was more consistently conservative, and many speculated he would move farther to the right in 2008, ITTL maybe he does. He's also a more likely VP (he was mentioned as one in 2000, 2004 and 2008), and had a higher profile than Dodd. Dodd was also probably too progressive (opposing Iraq and abortion). I picked Dodd because he announced his support for SSM in mid 2009 after being convinced by his daughters, if I remember correctly, which I thought would add to the drama. Bayh would also probably end up not supporting an SSM bill, and dropping someone high profile like Bayh from the ticket would probably alienate a lot more people than Dodd would.

OOC: that could work. sure lets go for it. Also I think we have to calculate for the Conservatives who would not defect to the Constuion party but would be distinctly uncomfortable with both Republican social Liberalism and Democratic Economics. Do you think they should be a seperate party or maybe just stick in the Republicans, plotting a internal revolution.

An internal revolution would definitely make for the better story, perhaps led by the son of our favorite former president, JEB!:p
