DBWI: No Premier Trotsky

What if Premier Trotsky had never been born? Would the Bolshevik revolution in Russia have existed in its OTL form? Would it have succeeded in creating the Soviet Union? What would have happened to the other post-WWI and interwar revolutions? Would a WWII still have happened without aggressive communist expansion? What would the Western Allies' societies have looked like without the First and Second Red Scares? Could we have avoided the White Terrors and J Edgar's tenure?

Trotsky was seriously lucky in 1922, given that he was absent from the room when the bomb detonated. And he still had difficulty gaining control of the party apparatus despite the decapitation of the Bolshevik nomenklatura.

Without Trotsky, it is likely that the bomb isn't detonated at all, and one of the other second string Bolshevik leaders like Dzerzhinsky or Bukharin becomes premier and gets cornered by the urban working class party apparatus in late 1920s to enclose peasant lands on an effectively capitalist basis.

Yours,
Sam R.

Well, before I'm carted off to the gulags (OOC: I guess the Soviets snatched up Korea ITTL, though why I'd still be here I don't know:p), I'll just put a few more thoughts out there:

What happens to the Shanghai Commune? Are the communists weak enough not to turn on the rest of the Republican side when they win the Spanish Civil War? Would Poland still exist? Without a civil war and revolution in Germany, it might somehow find a way to recover from WWI and oppose the USSR rather than aid it. Ironically, Russia could actually find itself stronger within the Internationale rather than have its influence diluted like in OTL.

Well, his masterful handling of Stalin's cabal of nutcases may not have happened. Can you imagine a USSR with that butcher in charge? Probably not for long...:D

Oh God, you don't seriously believe all that Trotskyist nonsense about Stalin being a mindless thug intent on destroying Socialism and creating a Nationalist bureaucracy? Those show trails were staged by an oppressive party apparatus in order to discredit a Non-Great Russian working class candidate who had genuine popularity with the party membership. Stalin was the only man able to stand up to the intellectuals and that ogre Trotsky.
