DBWI: No Pakistan-Afghanistan confederation

When Pakistan was in its independence struggle some people like Chaudhry Rahmat Ali suggested a confederation with Afghanistan. In the 1950s his suggestion was realized with a confederation being made between Pakistan and Afghanistan following the end of dominion status for Pakistan in 1956, with the Afghan king being made King of Pakistan, and to this day Pakistan is a constitutional monarchy under the Barakzais. The Bengalis weren't so pleased, but nobody in West Pakistan was interested in holding on to it and in 1960 Bangladesh became independent.

But what if Pakistan and Afghanistan remained separate countries?

OOC: This was actually seriously considered in both countries in the 1950s IOTL, and a framework was even made, but Ayub Khan took power and destroyed its chances. Also only in the late 1960s did W Pakistan gain an interest in holding on to its Eastern wing.

East Pakistan if you please. Only rabid Bengali nationalists call it Bangladesh.

Pakistan-Afghanistan Confederation is not a nuclear power in this TL for sure. Without having to protect independant East Pakistan (the security guarantee was the only reason Dacca agreed to the new settlement)or directly facing the USSR they have no reason to.

I take it this butterflies away the C Asian wars of the 1990’s? The Confederacy does exist, Pakistan has no border with the region and Afghanistan is too weak to intervene.
