DBWI: No New Union Treaty

OOC: Inspired by this timeline

IC: As it's been over 25 years since the New Union Treaty was created which reformed the Soviet Union into a more federated and democratic entity, the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics, so, as we celebrate over 25 years since the reformation of the USSR into a more democratic entity and watch all those ceremonies in Moscow (where President Nemtsov and Prime Minister Poroshenko gave speeches on Red Square) and TV documentaries on the events, I'd ask what do you think would have happened if the New Union Treaty was stillborn and the USSR broke apart into it's constituent republics? What would happen afterwards?

Much blood spills. It would have been one of the greatest geopolitical disasters in history. Good thing the USSR is at what it is right now.

So, what could have led to the failure of the New Union Treaty and why? Yeltsin not having a fatal heart attack in the first weeks of 1991?

So, what do you think would the economic and cultural impact of a scenario where the New Union Treaty was stillborn be?
