DBWI: No collapse of the Greater German Reich in the 1990s

During the revolutions back in 1991, the National Socialists were overthrown and the Greater German Reich collapsed, and the nations of Eastern Europe which had been enslaved and exloited for so many decades became suddenly independent. A lot of people blame this on the fact that Germany was losing the arms race with the US, and that they were unable to develop a functioning, stable economy.

However, despite the initial enthusiasm and hope, the 1990s were a bitter decade: Eastern Europe saw a series of bloody conflicts, in particular on the Balkans. Germany itself was now run by a nominally democratic but de facto corrupt government that cared more about filling it's own pockets than caring for it's people. Germany faced declining birth rates (as a result of the end of the collapse of the Nazi's ludicrous welfare programs), mass unemployment and mess emigration, widespread poverty, and the rapid spread of HIV. The situation has become better in the 2000s, and Germany has been seeing an economic upturn, but the situation for the average man on the street is barely changed, and many people are worried about a slip back into authoritarianism... :(

So, I wonder, would it have been possible for the NS government to avoid this collapse? What would the world of 2008 look like with the Greater German Reich and the USA still being locked in a Cold War? What about relations with the Republic of China?

People might sight the arms race with the US as being the critical factor but lets face it, years of having to police the large occupied zone in Russia was a constant drain on the GGR's man power and economy. Boarder clashes, partisan actions and the sheer amount of land that the GGR was trying to hold down was an open wound that they couldn't help but bleed to death through.

Maybe some POD where by the GGR is able to create stable satellite states with in the Russian lands is occupied would help some but honestly I think that is pretty ASB.

I don't know if anything could have saved GGR. Reunification of Russia was bound to happen sooner or later, the Germans could barely control their parts of Russia anymore. Fascism in many German neighbors were weak, and the Germans only had East Central Europe in their grasp in the end (not to mention the debate about what to do with their overextended territory and their many failed colonization attempts). In the end the whole nazi idea just became a hole in the pocket. Now reunified Russia is a economic powerhouse, and Germany is slipping back int authoritarianism. However the fall GGR was bound to happen, to change it you need an early POD, perhaps even during the Hitler era.

One thing that may have prevented the collapse of the GGR is the prevention of Reichsfuhrer Himmler's "Cultural Revolution" from 1961 until 1971. The fanatical violence and political dogmatism of Otto Strasser's Nationalistische Front (NF) members caused the deaths of nearly 1/3 of the populace, and caused the military standoffs along the border with the Russian Republic in 1963 and 1968. According to some historians, Strasser was attempting to seize power in 1971, when he mysteriously died in the plane accident...

If Goering had come to power the Reich might have still existed. He was corrupt, yes. But he was more into realpolitik and would have been nicer to the eastern europeans and might have been able to turn them into loyal Germans. Unfortunately Himmler wiped out Goering and his faction when he became Fuhrer.

Uh-uh....this is just not gonna happen^^ You can't just transport historic events like the cultural revolution in China (different culture, different ideology, different stage of development, etc.) to other ATL's. Btw, that wa the basic flaw of "It the Presence of Mine Enemies" by Turtledove.

And Otto Strasser was politically dead before WWII, how should he have gained such immense power?

A slip back into authoritarianism? They're already sliding down that slope. When you elect a former Gestapo agent the Reichskanzler, what do you think is going to happen?

OOC: A German Putin, anyone?
