DBWI: No Co-Prosperity Bloc?

The Empire of Japan, seeking independence from the Liberal and Communist Worlds, formally established the Co-Prosperity Bloc with the Kyoto Pact in 1948 following the negotiated withdrawal from China in 1947. What began as a small collection of Japan and its proxies would grow into a prominent mostly-monarchist states on its own.
  • Empire of Japan (1948)
  • Empire of Manchukuo (1948)
  • Empire of Vietnam (1948)
  • Kingdom of Thailand (1948)
  • Kingdom of Cambodia (1948)
  • Kingdom of Laos (1948)
  • State of Nusantara (1948)
  • Empire of Ethiopia (1963)
  • Sultanate of Zanzibar (1964)
  • State of Macau (1972)

What if the Japanese had opted to attack the United Kingdom and United States in 1941 rather than just occupy the Netherlands East Indies? I think the simplest way to avoid the Co-Prosperity Bloc is to have the US and UK go to war with Japan.

It was likely. The only reason they never got into war was because the Japanese joined the Allies and promised to help the Nationalists in China against the Communists. Granted, the Chinese Democratic League ended up in power and left the Bloc due to bad blood and for US assistance to be rebuilt.

That and Manchukuo, which was a tense point until someone go actual Manchu descent came in and sucked up to the Japanese in exchange to bringing back Manchu culture, including the language

Wait. You mean to tell me the US and UK would have to go to war with the Nazis, Soviets AND Japanese? Ooh boy, the free world is about ten levels of fucked there, at least outside the Americas. And even then, you can bet the Soviets would work like hell to take down the US from the inside while the Nazis...well, did the same. Expect a Balkanized US if they have to take on all three of them at once.

Japan was a valuable ally not just against the CCP but at keeping the Soviets at Bay - yeah, the Nazi regime fell posthaste after Hitler’s misguided attempts at a land invasion of the UK (did that fucking idiot really think ANY form of Sealion would work? I know it was a different form but still...) But it took turning Stalingrad and Novosibirsk into smoldering craters to bring down the Soviets. Imagine having to drop the bomb on Japanese cities too? Shit.

I mean, I suppose Hitler’s hate-boner for communism could have gotten the better of him and he could have invaded the USSR instead, but he would have to have been dumber than whale shit to think about such a foolhardy adventure, battling not only the bloodthirsty Stalin but the Urals and that damn winter.

Realistically, the best thing happened, Japan is a good counter-balance to the rump State West China or whatever the hell they call themselves as well as the remains of the USSR.

Didn't many South American, African, and Middle Eastern dictators, fed up with Washington demanding more respect for "human rights" and "democracy" and Moscow demanding they adopt "socialist" policies, align themselves with Tokyo, even if it was in an informal matter?

yeah and look what happened there in those places

Brazil ended up getting couped by an underground democratic state and is formally allied with the states

Peru fell afterwards soon afterwards and is remaining neutral

Guatemala is a case of peaceful democratic transition after the people got fed up with the constant alliance shifts and is a well of trade partner of the states

panama be panama and the canal gave them a bit more leeway but after some negotiation they are definitely in the american bloc

Iran had a "revolution of the people" and is one of the few remaining "communist" governments out there

Afghanistan was just straight up annexed only to regain independence following the collapse of the soviets

the only place they really had some moderate success was in the african states and even then japanese meddling was what led to the expansion of south african territory to incorporate nambia swaziland and botswana, and the federation of liberia guinea and sierra leone just to keep the japanese influence contained.
