WI the airline and truck-bombe attacks that destroyed the UN headquarters in New York on 11th September 2001 had (completely) failed or never happened?

Would Al-Quaida have attacked somwhere else? If yes, where?

I heard the original 9/11 plan was to hijack a plane and crash into the World Trade Center in but Al-Qaeda changed its mind at the last minute and did the UN instead.

The truck bomb was aimed at the EMT and police responders, thus explaining why it exploded 45 minutes after the plane collided with the United Nations building killing Mayor Rudy Guliani along with many of the EMT workers who had established a base of operations in the garage area...

If the "two-plane" plan had been utilized against the World Trade Center, there would have certainly been fewer deaths of EMT workers and firefighters. Who knows, Rudy Guliani might have been a Republican presidential candidate in the ATL...

But the terrorists kinda lost the point as soon as the attack happened - they rebuilt the UN headquarters as one of the biggest buildings in the city, and US troops captured Osama bin Laden in Pakistan seven months later. A bit ambitious in his choice of enemies, that particular Saudi......

You mean the entire world? I'm tempted to agree...

Also interesting how GWB U-turned from opposition to the UN on the grounds that it "interfered with US sovereignty" (aka was a stumbling-block in the way of globab American hegemony) to outfitting the 82nd Airborne with blue helmets!

It may sound crazy, but thank God it happened the way it did. The UN coming together to fight terrorism is one of the best things that ever happened to the world IMO.

You know there were voices in some countries after the attacks calling for 'throwing out the rule book' 'taking the gloves off', you know all the usual euphemisms for illegal action, IMO it could have happened if it wasn't for the way the UN took charge of the counter-terrorism campaign.

The quick decision to launch a police and intelligence led campaign against the terrorists brought the world together as never before. The US troops who captured Osama bin Laden in the tribal areas of Pakistan were of course needed in that lawless part of the world, but the unprecedented police and undercover cooperation that pin-pointed his location was what led them to his position. Imagine the disasterous implications if the world's militaries had been the lead agencies? They'd probably still be blundering around. Bin Laden might even still be free. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Who can forget the UN secretary general's TV appearances? First after the attack, when his words reminded us that we were "one world, one people, one purpose - to live in peace and free from terror." and second when he announced the capture of Bin Laden, the magnanimity of his offer to address the 'jihadists' grievances, the dignity and open mindedness in promising reconciliation.

I'm personally delighted that the UN has 'grown up' as an organisation and now looks more and more like the 'world government' it was supposed to be when it was created.

Part of that was that a bunch of foreign leaders and diplomats died in the attack. That tends to make other countries angry, ya know. I must admit I was kinda surprised to see the 82nd Airborne being outfitted as the US' contribution to a UN force in Pakistan. But Shimbo was right about Interpol and its work. The fact that there managed to be something like 50 intelligence agencies working together is mildly amazing.

Had he done that, it would have been much more difficult for him to sucessfully escape his US marine captors in that attack in the outskirts of Islamabad...
Truth is that a good number of influent people doesn´t like the UN at all.

That is certainly true. One need only look at the U.S. Embassy bombings in Jakarta, Bangkok, and Manila to see that despite UN efforts, most of the Muslim World and certainly a great deal of the Third World saw the attack as a "strike at the American Great Satan".

To make matters worse the Chinese have used the "War on Terror" to justify their ethnic cleansing of Xinjiang, the Russians have used it to justify the "internment camps" in Chechnya, and the Serbians used it to bring back General Ratko Mladic's election as President in 2004. The fact that 9/11 has been used to justify these "crimes against humanity" is shocking...

Perhaps, had the Sept 11 attacks not occured, or had Al-Queda hit a different target, rather than be greatly stretghened, the "Useless Notion" would finally have been allowed to die, and would have been replaced with something better, such as an Alliance for Democracy. This would have removed the thugs and dictators from their stage, and would have allowed the free world a free hand in dealing with the less reputable naions of the world... Given that bin Laden's crimes have dammed another generation to tyranny, his end was well-earned. Good riddance.
