Instead of the infamous November 1979 storming of the Soviet Embassy in Tehran (originally intended with the students taking the staff hostage, but ended up with the massacre of everyone inside), what if the radical Iranian students:
Scenario 1 : Kept "calm" and took the staff hostage instead of outright killing them.
Scenario 2 : Stormed the American Embassy with similar tragic results
Scenario 3 : Stormed the American embassy and took the staff hostage
Scenario 4 : Decided that storming the Embassy of a superpower was an extremely bad idea and called the whole thing off
How would Brezhnev and the Soviet public, Carter and the American public, and the world in general react to each the first three scenarios? How would each scenario affect the Cold War and Middle-Eastern goepolitics?
(OOC: The idea came to me after reading up an article on the OTL hostage crisis, something about some of the students suggesting storming the "godless communist" embassy. Then I recalled watching footage of the hostages and the angry students and wondered, what if the worst-case scenario had happened)
