DBWI: No 12/12 jet bombings?

Well, folks, it's that time of year again. On Dec. 12, 1997, Al-Qaeda terrorists blew up three military jets and slammed a couple of U.S. Airlines 747s into the Twin Towers in New York, killing 4,200 people(including 117 military personnel). What would have happened, if the Clinton administration had been able to stop the attacks? Could we have avoided the disasters of the Bush/Cheney years(the Crash of '01-'04, and the invasion of Syria in 2005)? Would Hillary ever have been elected in '08, with Barack Obama as VP? Discuss.

I was surprised with the nomination of Hilary Clinton in '08, given her connection to the 1st Clinton administration security failures. I was not at all surprised (unlike some people I could name) by Barrack Obama's nomination; his 2004 convention speech marked him as a up and comer in the party. I fully expected him to become president by 2016 (and still do!).

But you were speaking of "What Ifs". If there had been no 12/12 attack, then VP Gore would have become President in 2001. The economy would have certainly dipped still by 2002 at the latest, which makes his re-election uncertain in 2004. And if he's running in 2004, then Senator Obama probably doesn't get the convention speech, so his higher office hopes get put off 4 or more years.

Why did you feel the need to remind us all of those events of the last 15 years? This is a forum full of historians, I'd appreciate if you didn't patronise us like that.
