DBWI: Nixon survives?

On May 15, 1972, President Nixon was assassinated by Arthur Bremer, and was succeeded by Vice President Spiro Agnew. After winning a neck-to-neck primary race over Wallace, George McGovern is defeated by Agnew by a historic 63-35 margin. Instead of endorsing McGovern or run as an independent, Wallace remains neutral in the race.

While the general consensus is that Nixon would win given the theory that no one can beat him after China, Nixon may not be able to reach the crazy 60-percent mark. Just before his death, Nixon was leading McGovern by a 49-39 margin. Would Wallace attempt to run as an independent, had he survived, unlike in OTL where he knows he cannot possibly change anything?

Also, could we simply avoid the chaotic and disastrous 1970s? While a report in 2002 reveals that several aides of Nixon are involved in bugging Watergate, the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee; it was simply a common practice. After all, the bugging practice begins with LBJ, and it was until the impeachment of Agnew that the media would follow every move of the President like spies. Nixon, widely considered one of the greatest presidents of our age, surely would avoid all the unfortunate things happening later. Any thoughts?

Oh hell, Nixon nearly got blown up by Hunter S. Thompson back in 68. The man was doomed. And don't give me that 'greatest president' line of BS. Although his policies were generally good, this is the same man who helped derail the Vietnam peace talks in 68. He was a bum, and a worse liar than Johnson!

Vietnam was going nowhere and Nixon was always a crook. He would've lost to McGovern. Honestly I think Agnew, while he maybe didn't steal the election (He could've won anyway on sympathy for Tricky Dick) probably fudged the numbers. Nixon was a bitter man and blindly ambitious man, yes, but Spiro Agnew was the worst President we had since Buchanan or Johnson, if not just the worst.

Either way, we get saved a lot of trouble. No Agnew impeachment and removal, Nelson Rockefeller doesn't die in office from the stress of having acceded to the Presidency under such circumstances, and so no Year of Three Presidents and perhaps Wallace doesn't win in '76. And without Wallace and his circle, cooler heads might've prevailed in Korea and a lot of suffering could've been avoided in Northeast Asia...

Without Wallace you would also have avoided the fist actually impeached and removed President in American History. When he defied the Supreme Court and tried to undo Brown v. Board along with publically calling the Civil Rights Act "a pile of crap that should never have seen the light of day" he more or less dared Congress to take him out (and boy, howdy did they, 400-12 in the Hose and 98-1 in the Senate).

Still, Ted Kennedy did a great job with his reconciliation government (who would have ever thought that Reagan, of all people, would have been will to serve as veep "for the greater good of America"?).

Without Agnew, we withdraw from Vietnam without having a President start another depression in an effort to win, and China might not go to the Gang of Four crazies with Agnew's whole Republic of China spiel. That alone probably makes sure there isn't going to be a Second Phase of the Korean War.

Blech. The root of the 1970s bad economy can be traced to Nixon's policies, though IMO Agnew is what made it a depression. The Nixon and JFK fanboys are both wrong, and both politicians are grossly overrated.

OOC: Wallace was cynical/clever enough to have never done that.
