DBWI Nicolae Ceaușescu died!

Moscow (Reuters)

Former Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu died this night on Volgograd aged 99..."

"...Ceaușescu was the romanian dictator from 1965 to 1989, ruling a totalitarian one party dictatorship, and was overthrowned on the Romanian revolution on december 22 of 1989 after the army switched sides during the collapse of the warsaw pact..."

"...In Romania, crowds celebrated the news of the death of their former dictator, who fled the country on a helicopter during the revolution, proceeding to the Moldovan SSR, and later to Russia, where he was granted political asilum, albeit the russian government refused him a state pension, and so he has lived the last 28 years with money from his supporters around the world...."

"..."It is nice to know that the cold war finally ended to Romania", says Bianca (27), one of the thousands who took part on the demonstrations today "But it is also a shame to know that he has gone unpunished"..."

"... Many rumours about Ceaușescu death have been circulating since 1989, after the infamous episode when he threw his pilot off his helicopter after he faked economic problems, but this time there is a official confirmation, and he will be buried on the upcoming days on a unmarked location on Volgograd

Well, it seeems that one of the last cold war dictators is dead, what do you think?

OOC: this is taking place on the chat, and apart from Nicolae escaping, there was no major change on the timeline

Wow, he lived to 99? Bad guys seem to live long lives, it seems. The current U.S. president is the oldest to ever enter the office, Fidel Castro only just died recently, and Robert Mugabe is still alive and kicking.

I heard the King of Romania has spoke out, saying a statement along the lines of the now-dead former dictator was a bad guy etc.

So any news on Enver Hoxha?

somehow alive at 109. However being a political prisoner in his own country since after the coup in 1976 (didn't think the Greeks could get an operation sorted after only 2 years of democracy being restored, though the Americans did help i guess, at least thats how the story goes allegedly). 41 years as a prisoner though, i'd feel sorry for him if he wasn't, well, a sort of mad dictator.

thankfully yugoslavia is stable now and it survived its internal issues.
I think "stable" is a bit strong of a word. It's not in imminent danger of collapsing into civil war, but support Croat separatism is rising every year and the Gulf states are pouring money into radical mosques in Bosnia and Kosovo. The peace agreement between the government and the KLA can fall apart at any moment too.

polls are showing that, minimum, 70-75% of people in the country support united Yugoslavia, thanks to the policies of the United Yugoslavia Party. This support is fairly level across all nationalities.
