DBWI: New York Olympics '08

So who watched the opening ceremony for the NY Olympics last night? Pretty impressive on the whole. Very much, as many commentators have been putting it, "America's coming out party", signaling America's emergence as a major world power.

I know that there are still alot of concerns about America; human rights issues (I was very surprised by the lack of "Free Texas" demonstrations), a potential economic bubble, the environment, etc. but America has still come a long way from where it was fifty or a hundred years ago.

What are your thoughts about it?

Personally it was interesting to see the reaction of the Havana government which has denied the legitimacy of the Communist/ Socialist government since 1934, when members of the Democratic/Republican government fled after the collapse of the Herbert Hoover regime in Washington D.C. As for the "Free Texas" demonstrations, the latest cause celebre is the "Free Deseret" movement, where President Thomas S. Monson has been imprisoned ever since his election to the beleaguered religious organization....

Deserete might be more "flashy" and headlineworthy, but we are still kicking, and hard I might add, Texas will be free!

Also, while I'm not responsible or condone their actions in any way, I feel its my responsibility to tell yall to stay away from NYC. I've heard some pretty bad rumors floating around Houston about what some extreme seperatist groups plan to do to NYC after the US' response in Amarillo during the 'Free Texas Now Demonstrations' last year. I just hope they dont do anything rash, not reason to alienate the world whos on our side:(

Yeah, I noticed that Cuba was competing under the name "American Havana" to not ruffle Washington's feathers too much.

Texas's big problem, as I see it, is two-fold. One, it can't seem to get its independence movement together under a single cohesive umbrella. There are too many disparate groups involved, all competing with one another, often enough. Secondly, theres the simple fact that the USA can't afford to let go of all the resources Texas has. Just think if an independent Texas joined OPEC! The strength of the USA's current economic boom has alot to do with its ready access to natural resources like these, and letting go of a big chunk of them just isn't something I think they're prepared to do.

Its true, we're basically a modern version of a colony...:(

If we could get everything together we might have a chance, at least autonomy, but there are way to many groups. I think it was the Alamo Liberation Army that made the threats against NYC but they make up like .01% of the population and are based out in West Texas somewhere. They are pretty much the reason the army directly occupies El Paso.

What are my thoughts? That the cliquists and reactionaries who destroyed genuine people's democracy when they announced "Free-Market Socialism" should be shot as traitors.

The government is spending nearly 6 times the healthcare budget on this event. Debs would be roling in his grave

What do you expect from the same government that would have tore up the old Constitution in 1921 had those army defectors not stolen it and smuggled it to England:rolleyes:

It's such a shame that America's time to shine has been overshadowed by that vicious little war in South East Asia. For Heaven's sake, do the Japanese not realise that Vietnam WANTS to be part of the French Union?
Sorry to hijack the thread a little, good luck to all Americans! I visited New York last year on my gap year... a cheap Imperial Airways flight to Toronto, followed by a cross country American expedition with a couple of friends. We had a couple of scary encounters with Party officials, but other than that, I enjoyed it greatly. I'm just hoping everything will go well, and for once in their lives, the Texans would JUST SHUT UP! :D

This is annoying, all these damn tourists are crowding the walk ways. I seriously hate these tourists as they take pictures of everything and descend upon every single neighborhood for lodging because all the hotels are booked.

Ever since the 1999 Christian Coalition protests in Washington D.C., many people believe that American government should loosen up its restrictions on religion. I formally disagree. What many international observers fail to recognize is that Christian Coalition agitators like Pat Robertson and Ralph Reed would have us return to the days of a Christian theocracy, stripping away the reforms that have taken place since the 1930s.

We don't know how:p

Consider that the "loyal people of Texas" seemed to be apt more for cannon fodder than actual military combat, I'm not surprised. During the 1979 invasion of Mexico, the state of Texas did more to incur the 60,000 casualties and 26,000 combat deaths through poor planning, and incompetent military officers, rather than the PRI guerilla tactics of the Mexican military.

I don't know how you feel. Although as a Junior Party Member I'm glad we got some time to shine.:) PRA!PRA!PRA!PRA!

Another problem that Texas really faces in terms of its independence is gaining international support. Now frankly I see that as rather difficult, as its claims of human rights violations against it are somewhat denigrated by its own rather sketchy human rights record. The various paramilitaries that advocate Texan independence are equally as infamous for their attacks against Blacks and Hispanics in Texas as they are for their attacks against the rest of the United States. This is certainly one aspect of the Texan house that it needs to get in order before it can have 'any' hope of international support for independence.

And bringing us back to the games, did anyone catch the USA-Brazil basketball match? Talk about blood on the court! Even still, for as nasty as that game got, I think there managed to be an overall positive feeling at the end, like when Fernando Gracie pumped his fist and the whole arena cheered for him. Crazy times...
