DBWI: Mr. Plankton and Captain Krabs Swapped Roles from the start

One of my favourite episodes of Spongebob Squarepants is The Algae's Always Greener, where Captain Krabs, after yet another unsuccessful attempt to plunder the secret formula from the Crusty Coral and from Mr. Plankton, ends up sailing his ship into a storm that sends him to an alternate universe where he's the Krusty Krab's owner.

You may or may not know this episode was one big development gag, since when Hillenburg, Ennio Torresan, Erik Wiese, and Mr. Lawrence were making the show and writing scripts, Krabs was the owner of the Krusty Krab, while Plankton was the show's villain, this mad scientist character who ran a rival restaurant across from the it titled the Chum Bucket.

While it might not have affected it that much, would keeping this change the success of the show, which was cancelled after the post movie seasons were critical and rating flops? How would this affect Nickelodeon's state over the next two decades and beyond?

Good question. Any suggestions?

Honestly you would have to deal with very different themes for the series.

Captan Crabs is pretty much defined by his greed with it his desire for more ending up foiling him as much as anything else, where as plankton has always been defined by his insecurities and desire for love and acceptance.

I mean take Karen, he built her to be his girlfriend because he just wanted some one to love him and Captan Crabs ended up whisking her away to be his which is one of the reasons their conflict is so freaking personal. As the show went on we learned more and more that Crabs was always a taker, always took advantage of Planton until that one day when the Karen incident happened and Plankton just had enough.

I mean when we are first introduced to Plankton he's that boss that tries way to hard to get every one to like him, as the show went on we find out more and more about his past and he becomes more and more sympathatic while Krabs goes from sitcom nemisis to some one that a lot of people love to hate. One of the best aspects of sponge bob is seeing exactly how that relationship became toxic and horrible.

And lets face it a lot of Plantons failed mad scientist escapades and best jokes are built upon his efforts to become more accepted and loved by the community, its also why he never fires sponge bob or Squidward even when they screw up. You honestly kind of get why sponge bob is so loyal to the resturant and why squidward stays on even though he hates his job. Their all friends and they stick together.

With out that dynamic the show loses some of its heart.

Take for example the Pizza episode where some one orders a Pizza from the crusty coral. Plankton ever eager to please makes a pizza and gives sponge bob and Squidward a boat and well they screw up and you see Plankton visably freak out and get terrified the longer his employees are gone, until he's in a corner rocking himself back and forth when they get back to the resturant in the morning.

I don't see Krabs doing that.
