DBWI-McCarthy Not Exposed as a Soviet Agent

We all remember the famous incident where the supposedly anti-Communist senator Joe McCarthy(R-WI) was exposed as a Soviet agent in 1954. It turned out that the man who claimed to be America's watchman against Communism was in fact hired by the Soviets to create havoc in the American government and society and discredit anti-Communism in the US. But what if all that never happened. What if the truth about McCarthy's motives never came out, and people continued to see him as another fevered Commie-hater?

Really, you put too much faith in MacCarthy. He accepted money because he was a gambling alcoholic with a need to feed his addictions. From his incoherent ramblings to a few interviewers and fellow inmates before he died in prison, one can assume he excused himself with taking communist resources to fight communism.

When it was revealed he took money from the Soviets, he was on the decline anyway. Towards the end he was increasingly paranoid and very heavy-handed. It was only a matter of time before he and his cronies was booted out of the Special Subcommittee on the House Comittee on Un-american Activities.

I don't think things will change that much. Perhaps the tradition of politicians releasing their tax records might be delayed another ten years, but we just need another bribery scandal - and by now we know there were plenty of them for the media to sink their teeth into in stead of MacCarthy.

McCarthy was incharge of a small, but loud minority within the republician party who's vote was becoming more and more crutial as apparent in the failing in the 1954 mid-term elections as it played on the anti-communist route.

Had McCarthy not gotten drunk at that bar on the night of 1954 because of a balot incount of which it appeared a close ally of his lost his seat and then phoned the head of the Democratic Party's answering manchine to yell, "you'll never get rid of him you {deleted}, I'm a spy and my friends in the big..., red... castle... will make sure he's back there before tomorrow."

Had McCarthy's friend actually lost his seat he would have been ignored and it would have just have been reguarded as another drunked misery, however, when he got back his seat, things went out of control.

Had he not gotten drunk that night or had the ballot papers been counted correctly, he probably would of remained a loud minority in the party. However, one can only speculate what would have happened afterwards.

Although I wonder what would have happened if McCarthy did the same thing if he was president a few years later.

Really, not getting drunk? The man was a raging alcoholic with no self control from at least 1952 onwards. While the media of the time did little to poke in such 'personal' business, can you imagine him actually convincing people while standing dead drunk at barn stormings trying to become president? In the committee, he could at least sit down.

Not President, Vice President as a way to stop him from shouting in the senate and then arranging for the assassination the President. I mean remember people did have supiousions about McCarthy's staff being communist agents but the FBI didn't want to upset the foundations of the Republician party any further.
