DBWI - Mathias Rust actually lands in Red Square?

OK, I was reading up on a case from 25 years ago. It was one of the lesser known episodes of the cold war.
In December 1987 a German kid named Mathias Rust attempted to fly from Finland into the Soviet Union. The result was pretty much as expected, as he got over Estonia, despite the Soviets claiming to have warned him he continued his course and was shot down.

The German authorities raided his house to find out why he went, (I remember there being conflicting arguments from the Soviets that he was trying to attack them - yeah right, and initially from Germans that he could have been trying to defect to the Soviets).

As it was Der Bild was able to publish his diary after it was returned to the family and it turned out he was trying to kick start the peace process between Gorbachev and Regan.

OK, so slightly ASB I know, but what on earth would have happened if he, by some insane fluke, been able to land in Red Square?

I imagine Gorbachev would've fired the entire air defense command responsible for the Moscow sector. Maybe he would've taken the opportunity to force the resignation of those air force officials who were vocal in the opposition of his reform efforts.

I don't know if it would have affected all that much, but 1988 might not have been quite as tense as it was, though. Reagan was not at all happy about the Rust incident, and berated the Russians for what happened.

On the other hand, a less tense atmosphere might not allow for the election of Paul Tsongas in '88(although he mainly won because of how poor a candidate Jack Kemp ended up being; even Paul Laxalt couldn't save his ass!).....though perhaps, in any case, a Democrat would have been in office for the last 8 years of the century anyhow, with or without Tsongas. :D

I doubt much would happen. He would embarass the Soviets, they would arrest him and hold him for a couple months and then silently release him back to Germany.

This is what I don't get - What on earth did he think he would achieve?

"Nichevo Comrade chairman - this silly fascist pilot has done what Hitler couldn't and landed in Red Square"
"Da you are right comrade defence minister, best we get on with surrendering to NATO and be all peacefull - now where are my Levi jeans and Bill Cosby Videos"

I could see some Airforce generals being fired but if anything, wouldn't the Soviets have become more hardline? Harder defences and a stronger grip on their borders?
How would this have affected the Baltic states breaking free or East Germany losing it's one party system?
