DBWI: Mary I doesn’t have a son

What if Queen Mary I Tudor died 5 years earlier than OTL? This would mean she didn’t have her son James, and the throne would go to her sister, Elizabeth. IOTL she nearly married Philip II of Spain, but to eliminate the possibility her sister would make England Protestant decided to marry Elizabeth to Philip and she married his half-brother John of Austria. If she decides to go through with her marriage to Philip, and Philip does not turn out to be a fertile father, then that means Elizabeth (suspected of Protestant sympathies) would be Queen. Would this mean that England would not be the “most Catholic country in the world” as it now proclaims itself? Could Protestantism actually be successful in England, or, as Grayson argues, was Protestantism doomed from the start?

Parliament, that dreaded institution likely would've gotten more power, and likely would have demanded more and more prerogatives. Mary was good at ensuring the right balance.

Nope. Not butterflying away James I of England, one of the greatest monarchs of his time.

It’s weird, isn’t it, he was such a powerful monarch, but he had no male issue and only one daughter, Queen Jane I, who married Louis XIII of France who became Louis I of England.

Indeed they were, so really removing them would be like removing two of the best monarchs England and later Britain ever had, a great shame.

Unfortunately, Louis died relatively young, with only 1 surviving son, and there was no way the English subjects would ever allow a permanent union with France, which is what sparked the English Civil War and the subsequent flight to America by King Oliver I after the grand compromise which allowed for Charles I of Scotland to be the new king of a United Britain.

No in the United Kingdom there is Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales and technically Cornwall is included but it ’s the official title is as a grand duchy.

Wales doesn't count I don't think, its' a Principality. Going off the royal coat of arms of Elizabeth II, it's Scotland, England and Ireland that count as countries in the UK.

Wales Has its own Parliament and makes most of his own laws. I would consider it to be equal to England in reality if not officially.

The Queen does let Prince Charles rule with a high degree of autonomy, but keep in mind this is rare among recent monarchs. OOC: Parliament in this TL has very limited powers

[OOC Mary marrying a bastard like Don Juan of Austria or calling her son James, name used practically only by Scottish Kings, is almost ASB. Her son will be called James only if she married James V of Scotland and if she do not marry Philip most likely she will marry either Emperor Charles V, his brother the future Emperor Ferdinand I or the latter’s namesake second son Archduke Ferdinand. Outside the house of Austria the most logical candidates as husband are Louis of Portugal, Duke of Beja if she married when she is Queen or, in the unlikely case in which she marry during her father’s reign, her paternal first cousin James V of Scotland or Philip of Bavaria. Mary marrying Philip and Elizabeth marrying Juan would be much more logical in any case]
