As we all know, the Booth Conspiracy, which aimed at taking out Seward, Lincoln and Johnson to decapitate the US government, only succeeded in killing Vice-President Johnson. Seward fought off his attacker, while Booth himself was blocked from entering the Presidential Box at Ford's Theater by Lincoln's bodyguard, causing him to attempt to shoot his way in, which culminated in Booth being gunned down before he could shoot the President. Only George Atzerodt was able to kill his target. What if Lincoln, rather than Johnson, had been murdered? How would President Johnson have treated the South? How wold he have dealt with Reconstruction?
