DBWI : Less Successful Vodou Kingdom of Haiti

Just returned from a Holiday trip at Haiti island, yet I can't help but keep being amused with their history.

For a Nation that started as the result of African Slave Revolt, Haiti has been the story of success, even if their start is rather rough.

Initially proclaimed their independence by Toussaint Louverture after ousting their French overlords, Haiti was then subjected to a series of French expeditions aimed to retake control of the island, as well as a vicious power struggle between the Catholic Population against the Vodou practitioners, which are the majority of the ex-slave Populace.

The Vodou movement, led by Jean-Jacques Samedi (formerly Dessalines), end up gaining the upper hand, due to the growing sentiment that Christianity (particularly Catholicism) is a "Slave Religion", and Jean-Jacques end up being crowned by the council of Vodou Hougans in 1802 as King Jegede I of Haiti.

...

Yeah, I know it is kind of funny now, on how the Kingdom of Haiti regularly get into spats with (West) African Nations over the Christian and Islamic oppression of Vodou practitioners, something that they can't exactly do if The Vodou Kingdom being less successful, rich, and influential.

So... What if Haiti turned out to be a failed state? What if the Vodou religion failed to unite Africans in the New World to break from their chains of slavery?

One easy way would be to have France win the War of the Second Coalition. Although they did send expeditions to Haiti the Republic couldn't really exert enough power in Haiti to get any kind of recompense at all- not with Suvurov kicking down their door in Italy. A France with even a year of peace, though, would be able to strangle the Kingdom of Haiti in its cradle.

France strangling Haiti in the crib would end up butterflying several other Vodou Slave Revolts declared in favor of joining Haiti.

Ah, I see... With less regions under the Vodou Kingdom's control, Haiti would never end up being a Great Power.

Oh... come on. Haiti only gets the "Great Power" label out of courtesy, since the Congress of Sovereign Nations insisted on setting aside at least one permenant chair for a majority-African decended nation with decolonization on the horizon, and Haiti was the only one that wasen't a burning dumpster fire. Now, I'm not going to say they're underdeveloped or anything; their per-capita GDP certainly outstrips anything else south of the Rio Grande, but so much of that is in tourism and their medical industry. Actual production wise, even if your correct for them having the smallest population of the Chairs, the the Carribean Islands pack the least punch of any permenant chair nation and even alot of the up-and-comers.
