DBWI: Larger German population than French

France today is a mostly homogeneous population (after assimilating Breton, Corsican, Alsatians, and their Jewish populations) of 180 million people.

Is it possible for Germany, including Austria, to have a larger population (which is only 125 million today)?

Maybe if the Andalusian Crusades failed and France didn't conquer the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages. If France was hemmed in north of the Pyrenees and west of the Alps it could have a much smaller population.
