DBWI: King dies

Famed civil rights leader and former congressman (D-GA) Martin Luther King Jr Died yesterday at the age of 82. Post your thoughts on this great mans life.

It certainly covered a lot of ground, you have to give him that -- as a preacher and icon, Dr King has played utterly key roles in the campaigns:

-to end segregation and for equal voting rights
-to end the War in Vietnam and for a Greater Peace
-for economic justice and ending poverty in America
-against the incarceration frenzy of the 1970's and for a rehabilitative justice system
-against the "decay of the family" especially in the black community*
-against the rise of drugs* and the "violent culture"
-to "protect the unborn everywhere in America"
-to defend the unionized industries in America and spread collective bargaining to her growing industries
-to defend teacher's pay and fight cuts in public education

*(made for some tensions with his supporters in the last campaign, though he did a pretty good job fusing the two)

Eh, it was good while he lasted. I can't help feeling that American politics is going to get even more toxic without him.

I believe it was toxic. Just remember how ugly the debate got in 1983, when King called for economic sanctions against South Africa for its apartheid policy. You had Senator Jesse Helms and Pat Robertson constantly alluding to the idea that King was working as a "Communist agent" against the Reagan administration....
