DBWI: John McKeithan doesn't run in 1972

(OOC: So, I've been rereading some Fear, Loathing and Gumbo recently)

Exactly as the tin says. What if, for some reason, John McKeithan decides to sit out the 1972 election. Obviously the nomination would then go to McGovern, right? Also, would Bayh still be on the ticket? Would it be a close election? Could we still see George Wallace and Donald Rumsfeld as presidents later on?

I think Nixon would win relatively comfortably, but I doubt his second term would be comfortable. Wallace probably wouldn't become President, likely Reagan but I can't remember who the other 1976 Democrat contenders were. I think America would be much better off without the nightmare of the 1970s. However, given how Nixon's campaign collapsed before the election and the scandals that besieged him I think he would struggle in his second term if they aren't butterflied away.

And the real nightmare that was the 1980s would never happen.
