DBWI: John Lennon Has Died

Musician and Political activist John Lennon was found dead today in his New York city apartment in the Dakota building. The singer was set to work with the remaining Beatles on the upcoming Anthology album which he had been promoting for the past few months. An autopsy will be preformed on Monday to ascertain the cause of death, though a heart attack is suspected. He is survived by his sons, Julian and Shaun, and his wife Yoko, who has declined interview. He was 69 years old.

I can't believe it! :(

Prime Minister Cook was just on the radio, saying Lennon was a great musician, a great socialist, and above all, a great man.

Imagine.

Lennon wasn't a Socialist. He was an idealist and Utopian thinker and cared about the common man and common worker, but was not a Socialist.

He certainly funded socialist groups in the 70's, and remember that documentary he made with Joe Slovo in 84? That was an unambiguously socialist reading of the South African situation.

His reaction to Famine Aid in 85 was pretty socialist; "You might as well call it band-aid for all the good it'll do. Unless you change the capitalist versus state-capitalist world system that causes these disasters."

I remember that Harry Chapin was very upset about that. He said it was better to try and help people than to just complain and do nothing.

Cheers,
Nigel.
