DBWI: John Kennedy was assassinated

As we know John Kennedy was shot at by Lee Harvery Oswald but fortunately for him he turned to speak with his wife and the bullet just missed him. The Secret Service pushed him down and Oswald was captured after being shot by officer Tippet when he was going for his gun. What if he actually been shot? Would there have been conspiracy theories? Would LBJ pulled us out of Vietnam unlike JFK? Would the Civil Rights movement ended with a Southerner as POUS?

Why conspiracy theories? The FBI would have investigated everything thoroughly.

They did OTL but as in OTL they can't find everything out and there are always a few loose strings like in OTL. There is also the political aspect of it. If he died there would have been people who said it was an inside job to prevent him from doing one thing or another.

  • The J Edgar Hoover report investigates the assassination of the President. A thorough investigation is done despite Hoover's tension with the Kennedy brothers, which discovers Oswald acted alone.
  • Oswald is tried and convicted of murder.
  • Due to faith in government in this era, most people would believe the report's findings.
  • Johnson likely continues adviser support and aid and supply just as Kennedy in Viena-tam (or however you spell that). Neither would completely withdraw all support from South East Asia.
  • Johnson would also thoroughly beat Goldwater for a second term, and use his domestic strength to more easily get through his agenda, which would largely resemble the New Frontier.
  • Johnson wins victory once again in 1968, continuing a peaceful domestic term until 1972, and thus extending our Camelot years another 4 years than the OTL (the only better thing to possibly come of this). Whether Nixon would have decided to run in 1968 like he did in the OTL, I don't know.
  • Would Reagan decide to seriously run in 1972 instead of 1976? I don't know.

Would the Americans still be the first on the moon, or would the collapse of the Soviet program see it put on hold (and eventually cancelled)? And even if the Americans did, would it still happen before 1970?

The blunders of his second term are avoided and America would be a superpower and not being dominated by the EURO-Russian co prosperity sphere.

OOC: WTF, man? Sorry, but I for one, can't allow this. :(

IC: Honestly, man, have you been listening to Alex Jones again? You do realize that's only a conspiracy theory, right? It could get you banned on these forums you know.

First off, Earl Warren never gets to investigate the death of Marilyn Monroe. The whole debacle that was the congressional hearings IOTL never happens, so Kennedy probably goes down in history as an American hero, maybe he's even the best-loved president ITTL, akin to our McGovern.

Kennedy is still pretty well-liked by most. He's certainly in the top 5, thanks to his preventing WW3 and signing in the Civil Rights bill and such. He may have had a little sex with Miss Monroe but even then many didn't care except for the ultra-cons. I don't see why any would care now...though I do agree with you one thing: McGovern was a damn good President....although I don't think he'd have won in '72 without VP Carter and Wallace's running as a third party('76, though, was a sure shot).

In any case, do you think that Nixon still would have won his single term, or perhaps twice, in '68 if Kennedy had been offed by LHO? Or that he would have had to go thru Watergate in June '72 for that matter?
