DBWI: JFK is dead.

Today John F Kennedy died of a heart attack. It's just been confirmed by President Clinton.

He was old, I know, but he seemed as he would go on forever. Your thoughts on this?

With his health problems its a miracle he lasted through both his terms, especially with the stress he was under.

He may have been somewhat frail in the past few years, but he was a tough old buzzard, though. The man was like a cat with 9 lives; he cheated death a number of times besides that assassination attempt in Texas. He even outlived the idiot -- can't remember his name -- Harvey Oswalt (?) that came up with that harebrained scheme to shoot him. Guy died in prison a few years ago as I recall.

I wish I had a link -- his speech at the 2008 Dem Convention was a pretty good one, especially for a man of 91. He was truly the "grand old man" of the Democratic party. It seems like he's been around forever and it's hard to believe he's gone.

Considering how frail he was it was a miracle he lived to be presidnet in the first place after his 1957 hospital visit, just look at what he was taking: hormones, animal organ cells, steroids, vitamins, enzymes, and amphetamines

Indeed, his transition from "disgraced, pervy, 1.5 term president," to, "Statesmen and grand old man," over the past 40 years certainly has been a dramatic one.

Neither Marilyn Monroe nor Jane Fonda seemed to mind about that. :p

Terrible shame may he rest in peace, he was really popular here in the UK too, I don't think you've had a president like him since Teddy.

Can't quite bring myself to say I'm truly upset - sure I'm a Democrat and all, but he's never been my favorite Kennedy - but he made some damn good speeches.

"The future of humanity lies in space"* was probably my favorite.

Wonder if we'll finally get the full truth about the whole Cuba mess back in '62 now?

BTW, has anyone seen the film that nutjob Oliver Stone made about the Dallas shooting? It's kind of an obscure film and hard to find, but Stone has Oswald actually hit JFK and kill him. Plus, Oswald is suppossedly part of some sort of vast conspiracy. Stone's got balls to make such nonsense, IMO.

"I Shot JFK" I've seen it. Utter crap. It was financed by Raul Castro, IIRC.

Secretary of State JFK jr, is taking some time off to mourn the death of his father. Truly this is a time day for us all

Yep, that's the one. I still think it was in bad tasre for Stone to have that film released while JFK was still alive. Although I gotta say that JFK's response when asked about it at the time was a classic piece of his usual gentlemanly, diplomatic, yet sly and cutting style.

Yes. even us Republicans have to respect him. He and President Reagan, who became close friends despite the ideological and partisan differences, played a key role in bringing the nation back together after the bitterly contested election of 1996. Looking back 15 years later it can be said that their actions returned civility to American politics.

I thought it was really touching when Reagan presented Kennedy an honorary Academy Award. Kennedy had be a fan all his life and Reagan saw it fit to give him one. It's sad that we lost them both now. :(

OOC: I just love how these things always ignore butterflies. :p

IC: Jeez with Kennedy gone who will be the leading light of the Democratic party now? I mean I think we all know how chaotic things were for the party between Truman and Kennedy, and even then Truman was just riding on old Grandfather Roosevelt's coattails.
