DBWI: JFK has resigned!

Got this in the paper. JFK will be the first president to resign from office in history (can't blame him, terminal illness and all that). Sucks to be him. Winning an election, then having to quit the job 8 months afterward.

That vietcong terrorist attack in Saigon didn't help his health either.

what do you think?

OOC: he survives the assassination, but resigns in 1965 due to addison's.

OOC: I think he would have toughed it out. See, prostate cancer, Mitterand, Francois.

A bit too late unfortunately... The worst president since Harding...

Heh, a JFK who lived and decided to withdraw from Vietnam & push for a SALT type arrangement might actually inspire historians to re-evaluate Harding's peace-making efforts vis-à-vis the Washington Naval conference. But you already gamed that, no doubt.

OOC: Read Rethinking Camelot by Noam Chomsky.

JFK boasted of military spending and has actually increased us military presence (agent orange, helicopters, defoliation), and was an anticommunist hawk.

IDK what kool-aid you are drinking.

Can you not read? Where did I say that JFK would do the things I proposed?

Did you not see what I was doing? I was responding to the seond poster's off hand comment about JFK being 'as bad' as Harding, by casually suggesting a scenario that would see the reputation of both presidents increase.

It's a bit rich of a Chomsky fanboy getting stuck into someone who has read real history, if you don't mind.

Well, i am no chomskyite, but the withdrawal from vietnam scenario is destroyed meticulously in his book. I mean, all these oliver stone cultists are everywhere.

And i have read a good website on the JFK assassination:

http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/home.htm

Addendum: might i also add that JFK, by today's standards, would be closer to the blokes on PNAC than the democrats of today.

Guys, you should just pull out of this one. Avalon's views on JFK, on other threads he's created:

"He Started WWIII"
"He was a McCarthyite"
"Would have been manipulated by the Soviets"

Leave zero doubt in my mind that Avalon isn't seriously interested in an exercise, he's just interested in some ego-stoking for his confusing worldview to make sense.

While I do not accuse Avalon1 of being a lunatic, conspiracy troll who makes more stupid DBWIs then actual topics and rarely, if ever meaningfully contributes to any threads, I think this possibility ought to be seriously considered.

At this point, I'm putting him on ignore. I'd recommend that others do the same, since I'm pretty sure he's not interested in any real discussion.

No, i was interested in some real discussion. The WW3 thread was a very bad call, but still, i ave changed my ways.

And the mccarthyite accusation is backed up by facts.

And the soviets did try to manipulate him during the cuban missile crisis.

Look, they say he's resigning because of the Addison's and all that, but i think we all know the real reason: the press is going to uncover all that stuff about him and Marilyn (and all the others).

The best thing JFK did was invent the internet. Without him, it might have taken another thirty years, and we wouldn't be able to post about his resignation in real time on a message board. In 1965.

Jesus, just when I think I'm a hardarse towards another poster, Blue Max comes along and teaches us all how to apply a smackdown properly!;)

BTW, Avalon, I'm not going to put you on ignore (because I contributed to another post you started over the weekend, and had no problem there), but I do think I've had you on that list before.

OOC:
JFK increased military spending out of fear of a missile gap, and increased Vietnam little more than Ike had (he sent advisers and the US remained out of actual conflict, and Kennedy was planning to withdraw something like 1,500 of the troops by 1964 -a large portion of those there considering how many were there in '63-, and had talked with MacNamera about full withdrawal. Kennedy's basic plan, if you look at it, was to withdraw any US combat element while continuing to back the South with aid and resources). Kennedy, while a Cold Warrior, was also not a hawk. Combine that with the fact that, while still not a Hawk, Kennedy was becoming less and less hawkish and more and more open to better relations with the Soviets and a cooling of the Cold War (the man proposed a Joint Moonshot with Gorbachev twice for Christ's sake).

On the disease, I frankly hate the cliche that even if Kennedy survives, he'll just get sick and die a little while after. While Kennedy may not have been in the best of health, I would posit he could still live decades longer (especially since anything besides Addison's and a bad back were most likely just a bunch of symptoms of Celiac rather that individual ailments, which was a common disease in the Irish and only required cutting out glutton from the diet, and which was detectable back then to boot). I also doubt any of his ailments are terminal (again, Addison's is treatable and most of his other conditions can likely just be ascribed to Celiac).
