DBWI: Iron Fist had been white

Iron Fist was one of the first Asian superheroes. The son of Wing, a lost citizen of K'un-Lun and Heather Rand, an American woman, Iron Fist was a controversial hero not only for his non-stereotypical Asianness but also for being mixed-race.

Despite this, he is an enduring and popular character in the world and Marvel mythos. Yet Stan Lee admitted Iron Fist was almost going to be a white man. By Lee's own admission, this would have changed his character and arc from an Asian man raised reconciling his life in the West with his heritage in the East to another "mighty whitey" character.

What impact on popular culture would this have had if Iron Fist had been white? I know my own father said that Iron Fist was a huge inspiration to him as a young Asian man.

Well, he may not have been stereotypical back then, but he does suffer from some “Seinfeld is unfunny” vibes in the modern day. Like, the zen sort of martial artist thing is kinda mainstream.

I don’t think would’ve been that big given how Iron Fist was not that popular compared to other big list names.

I do think that it would’ve changed his dynamic with Power Man/Luke Cage.

Of course, him having to reconcile being of two worlds is pretty interesting and now they’re going somewhere new with this

If he was white, he would be seen as a product of the times, but adapting him would be seen as tricky by some.

Then again, there was the kerfuffle over how him being half-Asian doesn’t count according to some.
