I don't see how the UK doesn't allow itself to be absorbed into the American sphere of influence, along with Canada and the rest during the aftermath of WW2. The UN wasn't going to last with too many member nations being Soviet puppets, and good luck being an independent nation with no overseas empire or naval superiority.

Of course as the joke goes, "who annexed who?" For the longest time, every channel was the BBC. I shudder to think how American television would fare on its own.

If the Soviets hadn't launched Operation Suvorov in 1941, or it had went awry (it really was a close run thing) you might have had a greater Anglo-American role in the German defeat, one that leaves at least some of Europe under western control and gives the English some breathing space. Obviously Willie Gallacher's S.S.S.R didn't help either, preventing the Glasgow Soviet would be a big help, probably silencing the red terror a little.

OOC: Ah come on!!! that's unfair, these kind of threads are first come first serve on the plot.

ooc: sorry for stealing your thunder ma'am. :(

maybe the two branches can be reconciled that the sea creature was somehow successful, until the US liberated England. that probably works better than where i was thinking with Normandy getting somehow borked by ASBs, and would better explain why England is more willing to give up their national identity.

iC: Yeah, but the good thing is, British TV ended up having a pretty positive effect on American media, as ours did theirs. Nice little cultural exchange, IMHO.:)

OOC: I like this idea, btw. Yeah, I'm an American, but what got me hooked was the media culture getting all mixed together. Now that's cool. :D

OOC: Politically, England didn't survive the 18th Century let alone the 20th..... England hasn't been around since 1707.

OOC: everybody calm down and act civilly. Zuvarq, since you're the OP perhaps you like to tell us when and to who the British lost their independence.

England lost it's independence in 1066 when it was conquered by the French. It is now all but 1,000 years since England had an English monarch (Edgar II).

How about (a scenario I have mentioned elsewhere) English voters getting fed up with the West Lothian issue and an English Independence Party (not the rascist loony sort) getting the majority of English seats in Parliament and England unilaterally ceceding from the Union? Or maybe the Tories see they have no future with voters outside England.

For a date; as your whim prefers. I would put it about 1923 myself but an overarching European Union makes a much later date even more workable.

OOC: There is still an entity called England today, and it is the most dominant partner of the United Kingdom.

OOC: Second scenario, though to make it more fair the Germans may have done a failed Sealion, both delaying D-Day and quickening the Soviet advance west.

OCC: Zuvarq, for a DBWI thread to work it needs to be a narrowly stated what-if and one based on a specific historical event that did occur in OTL.
OOC: It is. England has been independent throughout the 20th and 21st centuries as part of the United Kingdom.

OCC: No, this DBWI is not based upon a specific OTL event. If an OTL event had occurred which caused the UK (England, plus Scotland & N.I. I presume) to cease to exist during the 20th century, then you could pose a DBWI asking "what if 'X' hadn't happened/failed, would the the UK still exist today?".

OOC: There are WIs like "WI: Independent South Vietnam" or "WI: Large Switzerland". A DBWI is just a fictional WI, so this is still a valid DBWI.

OOC: Actually, DBWI's are generally supposed to be based around a OTL Historical event, so the posters have something to go off of.
