DBWI Independent Byelorussia

So when the Soviet Union dissolved there was a push for an independent Byelorussia within the population. However, as we know, this movement was harshly suppressed by Russia who would then annex the territory officially. So what if the Russian reaction had not occurred and Byelorussia had become an independent state?

Well Russia doesn't have a border with Poland, so the whole faffe with them joining Nato is probably avoided.

There are two ways it can go, either the Kazakhstan route or the Baltic route. If it follows the former country, expect Byelorussia to be a de-facto Russian extension and ally, trying to keep within its good will. If it follows the latter, I'd say that the country would become a strong NATO ally, probably fitting in with the Poland-Hungary bloc of anti-Russian Eastern European states.

If it went the latter route the economy would implode and never recover like Moldova and West Ukraine. Like the former two countries its economy was completely tied to the rest of the USSR and was landlocked as well.

On the contrary.. If it modernize and gets the aid that was given to Poland and the Baltics then I see no problem as long as Russia doesn't interfere as they did in Ukraine and had the 20 years of stagnate war splitting the nation.

Belarus would be pivitol almost more so than Poland.

Alas Russia was hell bent to suppress chernobyl and its effects
