DBWI: Incompetent Santa Anna

Generally, he's considered one of the greatest statesmen, military leaders and political reformers the world has ever seen: but what if Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, father of one of the world's great powers, Napoleon of the West, Saviour of Mexico, well...sucked?
What would Mexico, the North American continent, the world look like today if Santa Anna couldn't live up to his height? Would the Stars and Stripes be flying over Tejas, or even California (okay...that's a bit of a wank)?

well, for one, Mexico would probably still be majority Catholic today...losses tend to calcify and entrench status quo things such as religion.

not really. President Freeman (1880-'88), our first Mormon President, nearly succeeded with the Open Plains Purchase...so I don't see why he wouldn't try to purchase California, or at least Tejas.

OOC: Mormon president in 1880:eek:??? Sorry that's asb, considering that the Mormons (even if they did ban polygamy earlier than otl) would be at huge odds with a Catholic nation. Or are you saying he's the US president, because thats impossible too, since Deseret was in Mexico during the Mexican-American War.

IC: A world without Mexico having Tejas or California? Wow that would be hard to imagine. Ever since the discovery of gold in the 1830's and oil in the late 19th century, it has been the leading economic power in the world. Imagine the world without the timely intervention of Mexico in the First Great War and a powerful check against the Confederate States of America! That would be one dystopic world:mad:

We would also have to consider how much this would have messed up Latin America. I mean just imagine the shining light of the Western Hemisphere turned into some crap hole like say the USA during Morgan's presidency.

Pedro II was heavily inspired by the reign and legacy of Santa Anna, imagine how the Empire of Brazil might have turned out then. The Emperor of Reform might have been a conservative(ASB probably) or at least been so divided as to isolate from the left and the right. Can yoiu imagine what Rio's papers would cover without Prince Manuel's antics to report?

Or Haiti for that matter, do you think the Americans would of been willing to dedicate the time and money to a project like the Recostruction, to a people the avaerage American regarded as subhuman?

The UPCA may never have reformed either.

Are we talking about the OTL Santa Anna making a few very bad decisions, or an ATL "brother" resulting from a delayed conception or some such? How would such an incompetent remain in power long enough to mess things up so much if the second? Afrter All Santa Anna was the one to firmly establish presidental authority as the guiding force of the Mexican State.

OOC: from all I've heard from reputable sources, Joseph Smith wanted Deseret to be part of the US. {EDIT: so imagine such a swath of land abruptly joined to the US - not only cutting communication between Canada and Mexico, but nearly doubling the size of the US}

(btw, "a Catholic nation"...Quebec isn't exactly a nation, now or then; and the Italians and Irish were pretty much looked down on)

IC: A nightmare in the flesh. God save the mind of Santa Anna!
