DBWI: Impeachment of Spiro Agnew fails?

As it says in the title, what if Congress didn't manage to get the two-thirds majority necessary to impeach Agnew?

He was President for, what, two months before they got him on those tax charges. Then again, he brought on a lot of damage in those two months, so he'd probably do worst if he stayed President. We would also never get the Presidency of Carl Albert, and later, the Presidency of George McGovern, after Albert resigned due to the Tongsun Park Scandal in 1975

If Agnew had resigned before hand (before Nixon that is); things would have been much better for everyone.

Who lost 1976 to Reagan, who was then assassinated, leading to Bush, who died of illness, thus we ended up with President Rockefeller, who lost 1980... My God, the 1970s was a bad time to he a president.

Rome once had a 'Year of Four Emperors'. In 1977 America had a 'Year of Four Presidents'. Add in Nixon and Agnew, and that's six in two years.

Apparently there were bets that Rockefeller wouldn't finish his term. One wag even bet on (Rockefeller's VP) Gerald Ford not only assuming the presidency, but dying or being forced out of office before the election.

As it was, the US went through more leaders in the '70s than the USSR went through in the '80s. (Or again in the late '90s before Putin took over.)

I think you'd need to butterfly Nixon's resignation/the Watergate mess in the first place; that is what started the chain of events.

At least none of them would have been world changing. Reagan's conservatism was pretty far out, but I suspect had he lived longer he would have moderated as he came up more and more against opposition from the Democrats and moderate Republicans. Bush and Rockefeller were just normal Republicans.

Well, dying soon after the election probably sealed his fate.

Well, the political chaos of the 70's were offset by the relative stability of the Carter administration in the 80's.

Anyway, back to Agnew. Had he been president longer, we probably would have seen a larger recommitment to Vietnam. It took the McGovern administration to finally get out of there. Also, the Agnew assassination eventually led to the 27th amendment, essentially allowing a President to immediately appoint a Vice-President, if the current one was incapacitated, without Senate approval.
