DBWI: I just got back from Yugoslavia

What a great vacation! beautiful country! The natural landscape is beautiful, so many historic land marks! A great example to the rest of the former east block, how people can rise up over poverity, and ethnic problems to create wealthy democratic nation.

Did you get to see the king? I understand he sometimes opens the windows to his castle and gives a short speech if there's a lot of tourists around - surrounded by bulletproof glass, of coure.

The Yugoslavians were so lucky when the fellow was available to take over as monarch; one of few men all sides could agree on. Seems like they needed something like that after Tito. It wuld have been utter chaos without him. Even the monarchists of this board have to admit it was good that a few countries had gone away from monarchs, so that this man was available from a respected royal family.

indeed it is. even though force had to be used to keep Montenegrians under control and not break away. But they are lazy lot and not likely to put much effort into breaking away anyways

No, I stayed away from the capital, I toured the safer parts of the country, like Bosnia, Kosovo, ect. As much of a nice country as Yugoslavia is, i'm not going to deny that the capital has a high crime rate.

I have an online friend in Ljubljana, she says it's pretty nice over there, but also kinda boring and whatnot. I have a lot of interest in South Slavic stuff.

Yes, Yugoslavia was one of history's close calls. It was almost brought down by ethnic violence, but the Yugoslavs chose a path of unity. I don't want to think of what it would be like if it had colapsed and split up.

On a side note, I have an aunt in Yugoslavia. She's Bosniak, and although I've never met her, I sometimes talk to her on the phone. She's taught me a lot of Serbocroatian, and our family might be visiting her this summer.
She makes a lot of Montenegrin jokes.
EDIT: And it's so cool, Yugoslavia's a monarchy! In southern Europe! The only one... but then, with the referendum in Greece...

Ah, the Greeks won’t go the way of the Yugos… they have no reason to. The Yugoslav monarchy’s only there because anything else would mean civil war. You’ve got to admit, though, that the US-style model did work – 2 senators for each state means that the Serbs can never control more than the Chamber of Deputies – not that that’s going to happen any time soon. Looks like the Croats will hold the balance of power the next general election…

I must admit I was a bit sceptical when Charles Windsor was offered throne, but it turned out for good. One must wonder what kind of impact he would make if the Communist hadn't abolished British Monarchy in 1949.

Were you able to go to the Mission of the Virgin Mary in Medjugorge? Apparently since 1981, both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox pilgrims have actively sought the waters of the mission, ever since they were reputed to have healed on pilgrims of cancerto AIDS in 1987. Apparently Pope John Paul I (OOC: not a typo) said mass in May 1985. The church is considered on par with Fatima (Port.), Lourdes (Fr.), Zeitoun (Egy.) and Manila (Phil.).

OOC: WWWWWWHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! This was going so good!

There was nothing to stop him joining the party as an ordinary citizen and make his way up the ranks. A lot of the former nobility did that. Why look how successful citizen Spencer has been in her roll as ambassador to the South Indian Confederation.

Cheers,
Nigel.

OOC: Sure. Let me guess, said communists are sipping tea with the Draka and the Confederate States of America while buying TVs from the East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. I'm going to just call this one a drunk poster and pretend it didn't happen.

IC: Is it really true that Northern Yugoslavia is having problems keeping all of the Hungarians out of the country? I've heard that Yugoslavia has a massive immigration problem--hopefully their appeals to Brussels can lead to the EU making some kind of arrangement for these nations.

 Please, you two, this isn't a DBWI. We're talking about real-world events here. Please actually read the thread before you comment next time.

(OOC: :D )

My family comes from Greek Macedonia, so there's always been a bit of an anti-Yugoslavian feeling in my family for "occupying northern Macedonia" and "keeping Macedonia divided" (along with a fair bit of anti-Athens feeling too). Personally, as a second-generation Australian, I don't care too much... though it is a fair point that Macedonia is different from most of Yugoslavia in that they speak Macedonian, not Serbocroatian...

By the way, about the Greek referendum thing - I really doubt their monarchy is going to be restored. The Greek monarchists just don't have enough popular support.

Last summer I travelled to Yugoslavia and I had no incidents in my visit to Belgrade. Of course, it's better to keep your possesions in sight and to stay in your hotel at night, but its cafes and beautiful avenues make it a very enjoyable city. Anyway, my favourite part of the trip was the visit to Zagreb... I love its bohemian feel and, above all, its nightlife!

It did manage to come into the EU pretty quickly though... along with Greece.

I'm still a bit hazy on what the Bulgarians are making of the Yugoslav monarch though... Can anyone fill me in?
