DBWI: Howe survives Bunker Hill?

Lets say Howe isn't killed leading the British charge up Bunker Hill. That would most probably prevent the route of the British Army at Bunker Hill. If the British won would they go on to take Boston? Could the US still win the war with such a talented general at the head of the British forces?

Excuse me?

But I think you posted in the wrong forum!

This should go in the Alternate History Discussion Before 1900.

Yes, I screwed up. I saw a post about WW2 and had a momentary thought about if I was in the wrong forum, guess I was right. Could a mod move it?

Britain had many other talented generals. Howe & his admiral brother were good, but sort of lost in the crowd of good, bad, & ugly.

To hang on to Boston the Brits must be able to regain control of the nearby New England countryside. That's problematic without massive reinforcements.

It will hang or fall largely on the restrictions on the RN, more specifically the introduction of the French fleet. Cornwallis was engaged in a campaign fairly similar to later Imperial campaigns throughout the world, and maintained reasonable c & c while expecting better resources as time allowed upon which the Patriots could not similarly rely. The lynchpin of this or any Imperial campaign of course rested on naval control, and as soon as that was impeded the entire campaign collapsed. I'd argue that with Howe but with France still impeding they lose, whereas without Howe but without France they win.

OCC: if Howe died and Gage relieved of command, either Clinton or Burgoyne would be the one getting the promotion, not Cornwallis.
