A key event in the fall of the Wiemer republic was Hindenburg's appointment of the NSDAP leader Hitler, as Chancellor in 1933, but Hitler was considered to be a moderate for a Nazi and were willing to work with other, more establishment, conservative politicians. Most historians view Rohm's coup in 1934 as the true start of the Nazi regime. Supposing Hitler had kept the SA in check? Could the NSDAP have turned into just another conservative party, or was constitutional government in Germany just a lost cause at this point?
