DBWI: Hitler respects neutrality

So, Adolf Hitler wasn't known for his mod temper, the fact that he declared war on almost all the countries in Europe proves it:
  • He declared war on Ireland in 1941 after Irish firemen helped to extinguish fires caused by the Blitz in Belfast.
  • He invaded Switzerland (and Liechtenstein) in 1942 to secure the gold reserves.
  • He invaded Sweden in 1943 to secure the iron mines.
  • He declared war on Portugal in 1943 due to suspects of them helping the British

Only Andorra, the Vatican City, Turkey and Spain were spared from his madness.
How would WW2 change if he had respected their neutralities?

Well, for one, he would have actually had enough troops to do some damage to the USSR once Barbarossa happened. Instead, he wasted so many troops going through the Alps and had troops bogged down in the mountainous mess of Iberia that he could barely spare anything for the Soviets. Once Portugal invoked the defense treaty with Britain the Spanish had to join the Axis.

Which meant that while they managed to take Portugal and Gibraltar, effectively making the Mediterranean a much more dangerous place for the Allies, the resulting war made a complete mess of Spain, and the Soviets had a chance to recover from the feeble attack the Germans threw at them because it came so close to November to make enough headway.

The last time an Spanish allied country invaded Portugal it didn't end that well for either Spain or the yesterday celebrating country. It must be a true proof of the Fuehrer genius that this time he avoided that pitfall...

Considering Spain spent twenty years after the war being patched up and democratized, and the Soviets occupied Germany up to Munich and Frankfurt after the war, I'd say they didn't go that well in the long run.
