DBWI: Herbert Hoover a Republican?

OOC: I am thinking about creating a timeline where, you know, Hoover is a democrat because he just gets closer to the Democratic party. So yeah

Could Hoover become a Republican?
What would happen?

In order for this to happen you'd probably need Wilson to win in 1916. In OTL Hughes barely beat him by winning California (despite losing the popular vote). Hughes took the US into WWI but became unpopular by 1920. Wilson tried to run again for a second non consecutive term, but he was unable to meet the 2/3 delegate threshold at the convention. The convention deadlocked and the Democrats turned to Hoover, who had run a surprisingly strong primary campaign, as a compromise candidate. Hoover was nominated with James M. Cox as his running mate. Hoover/Cox defeated Hughes by a landslide.

Now had Wilson won in 1916, it's possible that Hoover remains a Republican and he runs and wins in 1920.

*A good idea*
OOC: I might use that in my timeline. If so, is that okay?

Yes that makes sense,
but maybe the Republicans are blamed for the Great Depression
Would Calvin Coolidge not run with John Blaine as his running mate?
maybe the Great Depression does not end in 1938 like it did in our OTL?

OOC: Sure, as long as you credit me with the idea!

I assume that the GOP, not the Democrats, would take the blame. Ironically Coolidge might become President in this scenario if he - not Cox - is Hoover's running mate in 1920 and he runs and wins in 1924. In OTL he ran against Hoover but lost in a landslide.

Yeah that makes sense
Then who would run against Al Smith
and would they win?
Al Smith was of course blamed for the Great Depression
later getting Calvin Coolidge to win in 1932

Smith's election came as quite a surprise. He defeated VP Cox and narrowly upset Frank Orren Lowden in the general. Coolidge's comeback was equally unexpected. He went from losing in a landslide in 1924 to winning in a landslide eight years later.

Though maybe because Calvin Coolidge might not run at all in 1932, this would stop Alf Landon from winning the 1936 presidential election
we all know the main reason the Republicans won in 1936, is because of two reasons,
One: The Democrats were already pretty hated after being blamed for the Great Depression
Two: After Coolidge's death in '33 his vice, John Blaine took and then he died one year later, the Democrat Speaker of the House
Henry Thomas Rainey would never worsen America's already bad economy by stopping raising taxes, and getting rid of Al Smith's labor unions
So maybe if this never happens, like I said Alf Landon might win
or maybe not run at all
Wow
