Has anybody read the new book by Turturus, Upon This Rock? I know that some (though certainly not all ) on this board refer to Turturus as the "Master of Alternate History" but this new one by him is positively ASB.
In it, he has Christianity becoming the dominant religion of the Empire! No offense to any Christians out there, but really? Christianity's such a tiny, tiny religion. It's hard to find very many of them outside of the Levant or major urban centers (and, of course, Malta). His POD is that Caesar Augustus fails in his conquest of Germania. Does anybody else see how this could possibly lead to Christianity supplanting Solism as the Empire's dominant faith?
I mean, maybe Judaism (Jews are around 10% of the Imperial population, after all), but it's never really been big on seeking converts. Islam and Perunism are potential possibilities, too, but I doubt there'd still be an Empire at all if they somehow managed to become dominant. But the whole Christianity thing seems so out of left field.
I think I heard something about the Pontifex Maximus condemning the book (which will probably only bolster sales in Greece, eastern Illyria, Brittania, and northern and eastern Germania) and I'm sure some of the nuttier right-wingers in the the Senate and the Assembley may gripe about it, but what do you expect with politicians nowadays? I hope at least the Emperor stays out of it; Sol Invictus knows we don't need yet another Imperial scandal.
*Sigh* Why can't Turturus go back to writing decent things? I mean, I loved the Northern Victory Series, and Rule Brittania was great, too (someone really ought to do a WI the Armada hadn't reconquered Brittania from the rebels). Hopefully he'll get bored of flying with the ASBs after a while. We can only hope.
