DBWI: Harding Dies in 1923?

Hi all,

I didn't know about this until today, but apparently US president Warren Harding was taken ill in the Summer of 1923 and some of his staff suspected he wouldn't make it.

So, what if he didn't? Personally I think that it's entirely possible his early death could mean he's seen as one of the presidencial greats.

With Harding no longer around, how does his OTL Veep, Calvin Coolidge, do as president?

Why? When he died in '27 he didn't get a martyr effect. The scandals would have come out anyways.

As for Coolidge, he can't do much worse than Dawes.

He might not be considered one of the greats-don't get me wrong, but I do think at the very least he'd be seen today as 'average to good', rather than poor.

By the time he died in OTL he wasn't all that popular, but in 1923 his popularity with the public was still high.

Secondly, the fact that he isn't around helps his reputation when the scandles are revealed. I agree with you that they would be, but they wouldn't be as widely reported as OTL because of Harding's recent death.

Let's assume for arguments sake though that Harding's popularity sinks after his death as the scandles are revealed. Would this hert the GOP, even though Harding is out of the way? Could we actually see Mccadoo elected in 1924 ITTL?
Does president Coolidge even win/contest the republican nomination?
