DBWI: Great Cars of the Warsaw Pact

Say what you will about those Communist dictatorships, they did build some pretty cool cars. Nothing says Third World Strongman like an East German or Czechoslovak limo. And who could forget the legendary Berlin-Vladivostok rallies? I will always remember the Melkus that won Le Mans and those ubiquitous Soviet SUVs that never seem to break down.

Somebody should come up with a list of great WP cars, maybe arranged by the decade.

My father use to have a 1986 Volga M1244. Remember that beast? He bought it at the only Volga Dealer in NJ (the one in Garfield). I remember riding around in it when I was little, the back seat seemed like it was a living room sofa! All the polished chrome switches for the windows and door locks were so cool! It was built tough and had a really "retro" vibe with a lot of character that his later car, a Honda Accord, simply didn't have.

Well, far from flashy, but how would any college student have made it through the 90s without a Trabant coupe? A few hundred for a decent used two-stroker, used more oil than gas we used to say, got you where you needed to go, and you could practically pop out any dents you accumulated by hand. :D

I miss that old beater. :(

I think they're trying to bring back the Trabant...

'85 Bogatyr. Best damn off-road vehicle, ever. You could drive that baby through a bombing range. Which was kind of the purpose of it to begin with.

I currently drive an Eisenach M635CSi. Excellent car, and will beat machines 10 years newer around the track.
I'm also restoring a 1974 Dacia 6300- the sound of that big V-8 is incredible. Only a country with as much oil as Romania would make that sort of muscle car.
