DBWI:Gorbachev Turns 78

Yeah, that's right, the former Soviet Leader, and the man who revitalized the USSR is turning 78 tomorrow. He'll be having a birthday dinner at the Kremlin with Secretary General Vladimir Putin.

Any thoughts?

If Gorbachev did not appoint Putin as military governor of Afghanistan and crushed the mujaheddin revolt once and for all, he would probably be a mid-level supervisor in the KGB. And Rashid Dostum would not be succeeding Najibullah as President of Afghanistan.

I wonder what the reaction will be in the USSR after Putin gave the Binladin Group the contract to refurbish the Presidential Palace in Moscow. I heard rumors that the family gave the Russians valuable intelligence as to the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden (who was summarily executed in 1988).

The man single handedly saved the USSR from economic collapse by drinking 70% of all vodka produced, forcing Russians to wake up and go to work. That's an accomplishment.

Yankee propaganda. In the worker's paradise of the 21st century, all is provided for. The old hurdles which kept food and supplies from the workers in the extent they were needed have been overcome. Glory be to the Soviet paradise!

If he didn't bring in free elections and re-organize the Soviet Union into the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics, I doubt communism would still be around today. The Soviets took one direction (keeping the communist economy, but throwing out the totalitarian government) and the Chinese took exactly the opposite (keeping totalitarian government, by throwing out communism) Really the 80s could have ended in communism being wiped out of the face of the earth. Lucky for the reforms. It also took away one of the main reasons that the west had to fear the Russians. Personally, I think Communism and Democracy are a perfect mix. I just feel sorry for all those Chinese!

Of course they work together, "communism needs democracy the same way a body needs air." The Chinese have abandoned communism and merely keep it's banner while being capitalist dogs.
