DBWI: Germany Reunited!

OOC: This is from a TL where the Cold War continues until 2009, with the U.S victorious as in OTL.

IC:

West German Chancellor Jürgen Rüttgers and East German reformist President Angela Merkel have agreed to reunite Germany under the West German government pending a national vote, which polls say will pass by 90%. What do you think about this?

'Bout darn time! I was studying in the Freie Uni Berlin in an exchange program and you could see the shit hole the East was every time you ventured across the border. Of course they had the "gift shops" for Westerners to make you think things were available in quantities that in reality did not exist for the average person in the East. It was all so cheap, and if brought an extra pair of jeans with on your trip across the border, you were a king. We'll see if united Germany can afford to upgrade the rotting Eastern half of the country. I shudder to think what is going to happen to the rest of the Eastern Block that doesn't have a really rich western half to drag them into the 21st century. On the plus side, it looks like Europe doesn't need to maintain that massive military buildup against the Soviets anymore. I'm sure happy as an American that we can quit throwing away money on the massively bloated force we have based in Europe and around the world. I wonder what's going to happen to all those shiny F-22's....?

It's long overdue. I haven't forgotten the scene of thousands of Germans on both sides storming the walls, and pulling people from the Eastern side over the border into the Western side, with the East German police just watching, not doing anything, a couple even helping them do it. It was quite a sight.

I do wonder what the rest of Europe thinks. I mean, Germany united again has got to make some of them wonder if they will be a threat again......

President Obama has just met with the two German leaders in Berlin today, says the BBC, and they have announced that the capital of a united Germany will be in Berlin again...

In other news, Soviet President Gennady Zyuganov has announced his support for the Two Plus Four Agreement allowing a final peace settlement for Germany and the Allies in a summit in Tehran with Middle Eastern nations.

Damn proud to see Good trump Evil. Good thing it didn't come down to war, i mean these last few years have been tense, with the USS Lewis B. Puller in 1999 and the nuclear "drills" lately by both sides.

Currently, FOX-TV is trying to grant credit to former President Dick Cheney, despite the fact the fact that he was responsible for the U.S. nearly going to war with the Soviets in 2002 and 2003. Pretty soon, I will bet that Rush Limbaugh or former Vice-President Pat Buchanan will use the "Cheney legacy" as a "talking point"....

Plus he started the Iraqi war...

Pffft. Fox. What a bunch of lying buggers those morons are. I'm just glad to see it finally happen. long, Long, LONG past overdue, if you ask me. :)

Faraday Cage

This will certainly strengthen the France-Germany trading bloc within the European Union. Stock market wonks are probably factoring the effects into their calculations as we speak.

as much as I find Cheney a right-wing wacko, they have a point. As close to war as his arms races brought us, they helped weaken the Soviet Union to its current state and also showed the immense power of Western economics. Now, saying that Cheney, or any US president, is responsible for this reunion is pure bs; its all from the Ruttgers and Murkel and the will of the German people.

Now, we have to wonder what will happen to the rest of the Eastern Bloc, and even more so, the Soviet Union? Will the reformists like Vladimir Putin be able to keep the country together? (I doubt anyone can keep the Baltic States in though)

It should be interesting to see how a Republican like President Obama will handle the collapse of the eastern bloc, knowing the party, he may screw them over, and refuse economic assistance. God knows we dont need the Soviet Union to completely fracture.

According to the latest reports from CNN-TV, part of the reason for the collapse has been the constant ethnic and sectarian violence in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Chechnya, et al. being led by Osama bin Laden. All things considered, should we continue to purchase oil from the Arabian fundamentalist theocracy of Juhayman al-Otaibi..???

As for President Obama being called a "Republican" is terribly insulting. The split between economic conservatives of the Reform Party and the religious fundamentalists of the Christian Coalition collapsed in 2006. The Democratic-Republican Coalition that got him and Vice-President Sarah Palin into office, owes more to the grassroots Democratic Party than anything else...

OOC: It's just like OTL except for the Soviet Union.
