DBWI Germany reunifies

During the early 1990s, there was talk about reunifying Germany.

Making the two countries west germany and east Germany into one country again, the intitial talks showed a great deal of promise but they eventally fell through over several different issues and the two countries decided to remain separate for various different reasons.

But what if they had unified how would that have changed Germany, Europe and the world?

I don't think this would be good for the stability of Europe. It could lead to a revival of German nationalism and militarism.

Thatcher would be spinning in her grave. There’s a reason Germany was broken so completely after two world wars. People of that era just don’t forget or forgive easily and she personified that by being so anti reunification.

If it did unite I dunno, sure it was would be more powerful but possibly wracked by internal tensions remember they’d been apart a long time th cultural differences may destabilise the country to a certain as happened in Korea with different outlooks and cultures under one roof.

it would honestly lead into utter confusion though, West Germany is one of the most highly developed and rich Capitalist country, while East Germany is one of the most successful Democratic Communist Country with all their social programs and such.

Sure, West Germany had a minor lead financial wise because they had slightly larger population, but East Germany is one who made Communist system works within democratic measures.

Sure, the result of 1990s talks was relaxation of border controls and Berlin Wall turned into ceremonial border for West German Enclave in East German. But anything further than that will cause utter chaos in the rest of Europe with two strong countries unite into one.

I wouldn't say east germany is communist these days, their rating on economic freedom is higher then mexico. Its more that they have a very strong social safety net then are communist per say.

They still paid lip service to Marxist theories and still a single party state under the rule of Communist Party, the most economically prosperous Communist Party that ends up being the template of 1980-1990s economic reform that happened in Eastern Europe, and even USSR themselves.

Sure, the biggest problem of German Reunification would be how the Power Sharing works between Political Opposites, not some economic ones.

If Germany Reunification happened though, they would be theoretically stronger than UK and France combined... Something that sending shivers to the rest of Europe.

This thread is ASB. How would reunification ever go down with France, UK and the US all having a vested interest into keeping Germany down.

The Germans are already competing with France in terms of economy, thus there wouldn’t be any incentive for the West to support this agenda.

The influx of Poles and Russians into the DDR following the fall of the Iron Curtain, and the drain of Germans to the West during their entry into the European union has created a completely different culture in East Germany these days, making reunification seem harder and harder.

Then there was the Berlin dispute during the mid 1995s...

The change in the EG government a couple months before the Red Army withdrew did the most to kill reunification. The old regime ad effectively disintigrated. Had Rauchs young clique not occupied the party offices there might not have been anyone to negotiate with. A large number of the Ossies we're eager for unification.

I mean, East Germany joined the Aachen Treaty in 1999. It's not really relevant to them lasting, they have become essentially impossible to reunify before then. Besides, claim that they "joined the EU" is a bit of a Stretch: their Mark is pegged to the Euro and they follow most of the EU Parliament's rulings, but their current constitution is wholly incompatibile with the EU Charter of Human Rights (and is at odds with how 90% of the EU institutions work anyways), and they won't be official members until that changes.

Might have to do with the active attempts by the old guard the DDR to create a separate identity, instead of insisting they were the "true" Germany like the very First Leaders did claimed.
